came the bonanza farmer of the Red River
Valley–such a man, for instance, as Oliver
Dalrymple, of North Dakota, who found that by

decomposed the solution in its passage and left a blue stain on

as against 40 to 50 by the Morse or sounder, nevertheless it has
fallen into disuse, perhaps because the solution was troublesome.

The electricity of friction is so unmanageable that it has not
been applied in practice to any great extent. In 1753 Mr. Charles
Morrison, of Greenock, published the first plan of an electric
telegraph in the Scots Magazine, and proposed to charge an
insulated wire at the near end so as to make it attract printed
letters of the alphabet at the far end. Sir Francis Ronalds also
invented a telegraph actuated by this kind of electricity, but
neither of these came into use. Morrison, an obscure genius, was
before his age, and Ronalds was politely informed by the
Government of his day that ‘telegraphs of any kind were wholly
unnecessary.’ Little instruments for lighting gas by means of the
spark are, however, made, and the noxious fumes of chemical and
lead works are condensed and laid by the discharge from the
Wimshurst machine. The electricity shed in the air causes the dust
and smoke to adhere by induction and settle in flakes upon the
sides of the flues. Perhaps the old remark that ’smuts’ or
‘blacks’ falling to the ground on a sultry day are a sign of
thunder is traceable to a similar action.

The first electric railway, or, rather, tramway, was built by Dr.
Werner von Siemens at Berlin in 1879, and was soon followed by
many others. The wheels of the car were driven by an electric
motor drawing its electricity from the rails, which were insulated
from the ground, and being connected to the generator, served as
conductors. It was found very difficult to insulate the rails, and
keep the electricity from leaking to the ground, however, and at
the Pans Electrical Exhibition of 1881, von Siemens made a short
tramway in which the current was drawn from a bare copper

The most marked success has come as a result of the studies of
Professor Michael Idvorsky Pupin. He inserts inductances in series
with the wires of the line, so adapting them to the constants of the
circuit that attenuation and distortion are diminished in a gratifying
degree. This method of counteracting the effects of a distributed
capacity by the insertion of localized inductance requires not only
that the requisite total amount of inductance be known, but that the
proper subdivision and spacing of the local portions of that
inductance be known. Professor Pupin”s method is described in a paper
entitled ‘Wave Transmission Over Non-uniform Cables and Long-Distance
Air Lines,’ read by him at a meeting of the American Institute of
Electrical Engineers in Philadelphia, May 19, 1900.

The gorgeous clusters we have been considering appear to the eye
or the small telescope as little cloudlets of hazy light. One after
another were resolved into stars; and the natural conclusion was,
that all would yield and reveal themselves to be clustered suns,
when we had telescopes of sufficient power. But the spectroscope,
seeing not merely form but substance also, shows that some of them
are not stars in any sense, but masses of glowing gas. Two of these
nebul are visible to the naked eye: one in Andromeda (see Fig.
68), and one around the middle star of the sword of Orion, shown
in Fig.78. A three-inch telescope resolves th Orionis into the
famous trapezium, and a nine-inch instrument sees two stars more.
The shape of the nebula is changeable, and is hardly suggestive of
the moulding influence of gravitation. It is probably composed of
glowing nitrogen and hydrogen gases. Nebul are of all conceivable
shapes–circular, annular, oval, lenticular, conical,
spiral, snake-like, looped, and nameless. Compare the sprays of the
Crab nebul above z Tauri, seen in Fig. 79, and the ring nebula,
Fig. 80. This last possibly consists of stars, and is situated, as
shown in Fig. 81, midway between b and g Lyr.
